A few words about martial arts today

And the wrongfully accepted idea that eveything combatant is martial arts.

If you just turn on the TV, and switch amongst a few channels, you can't miss the internationally acclaimed bullshit called K1, another of the same flavour called Mortal Kombat (I really don't know why it is Kombat with "K" instead of "C"- combat would be more correct), OKtogon, NoHoldsBarred and other "reality", "mma"(mixed martial arts) fightings shows and so on. All in all seems nice and real, but apart from the fact that it all looks agressive and it surely gathers hundreds of people to watch them, both on the scene and by television, those shows have nothing to do and hanve nothing in common with martial arts. Folks, since when can an empty headed, yes, strong, but empty-headed monkey learn ANY ART ?!?! Because 99% of those who take part in those shows are only 200 pound animals, pounds of which most of the times 90% is not even muscles.

The whole charade is a masked advertising campaign for the manufacturers of the equipment used in those fights, not to mention, a masked advertising campaign for the places that host the events, and for the producers, the organizers, and sponsors.

I'm not trying to convince anyone about anything, but for those in the know, for anyone who has seriously practiced ANY martial art, those on the rings of such K1 events will always remain just well paid, well advertised bullies. Fighters, yes, but martial artists, martial arts practicioners, never.

Aside the fact that their names sound very scary, in an honest one-on-one fight, any trustworthy and honest practicioner of Kicboxing, Kung-Fu, Taijutsu, Judo, TaeKwonDo, Shotokan, GojuRyu, whatever... (name your style), would win in a couple of minutes a fight against ALMOST any of the "big boys".

I'm not saying there are no real names in the business. Nobody in their sane mind would deny the merits of the Gracies, or the capabilities of people like Fiodor Emilianenko, or Bas Rutten, what I am trying to point to here is that MOST of those shows are... well, shows !.

And as with all shows, the same with these: there is a director, a coreographer, and there is a reward for everyone participating, both to the loser and to the winner.

And, you and I, the public, in this case, of course, we remain with the well spent hours watching the show, with 15% deafness lasting a few hours if you watched it live, or/and with things undone if watched in front of the TV.

Summa summarum: Those are NOT martial arts !
