A few words about

Masutatsu Oyama

The founder of Kyokushinkai Karate.

Oyama, the founde r of Kyokushin karate, was an enigmatic man whose legendary exploits ranged from killing a bull with his bare hands to accepting challenges that totaled over 270 undefeated fights in one year’s time. Throughout his life he rose to any occasion that helped demonstrate his powerful art. Overall, he believed the ultimate goal of martial arts was world peace -that it could make a practitioner a better person and in turn make the world a better place.

Oyama had a very deep urge to become the best in everything he could, and that was especially true regarding his bodystrength, speed, and endurance. He took long training tours in the mountains during his first years of self-realization and he trained so hard that his body literally changed in the time of each year. From a known weak young child, he became a very strong adult, a fast, powerful, and nevertheless, calm, self-posessed individual.

There was noted once by someone a story about Oyama, that he went once to train up in the mountains, and in his extremely strong will to overcome his body's weakness, he didn't shave and didn't take much care of his body for a whole year, and when he came back to the village (or was it a town ?!) , he looked so scary, so bearded (having lots of facial hair is very uncommon in those parts of the world ! ) that people ran away from him because noone recognised him.

Apart from the storytelling side, there was and there still is a real side of Oyama's story, because everyone in the traditional Karate world knows that Oyama's methods do give results and Kyokushinkai practicioners are some of the best trained karateka in the world.

Lots of Oyama's followers led similar lifestyles, which of course led to similar capabilities.

Hollywood folks made a movie about a totally unreal life of Oyama, depicting a weak and almost insane individual, and only towards the end of the movie it's shown that it's about Oyama. I personally find that movie a groce misinterpretation of the facts, and a disgrace to the name of Oyama, a great individual and a great martial arts teacher !
