A few words about aikido .
and its creator, Morihei Uyeshiba
Aikido is a method of self-defence in the tradition of the Japanese martial arts. Aikido shares with other educational systems the following aspects: - the search for the right attitude - the coordination of breath and energy - repeated, constant and patient training The main difference between aikido and the common idea of "martial art" and "self-defense" is the absence of fight, competition and application of force. There is no resistance against an attack. The energy of an attack is extended and should end in a suitable technique. That requires not only skill, but also an ethical intention. "Ai" could be translated as "to join", e.g. the energy ("ki") of an attack. "Do" means "the way" in a sense of never ending learning. Aikido is very dynamic, flowing and cooperative. The training may contain the use of wooden weapons: jo (stick) or bokken (sword) to clarify the principles of aiki. The practice of aikido supports the clearing up of mental and physical blockades and leads to better attention, concentration, composure. It also helps to overcome own and foreign aggressivity. The "founder" of Aikido is Ueshiba Morihei (1883-1969). As a remarkable martial artist, he developed his art from several budo-traditions; as a religious man on the other hand, he wished to develop an art which leads to harmony of mankind. The origin of today's aikido can be located in the thirties of our century with important influences of World War II. In the fifties the first students went abroad to teach aikido (Hawai, France), from where it spred all over the world. Morihei was also a disciple of the traditions of the great warrior family, the Takeda family. Today there is the mainstream Aikido, affiliatedto Aikikai Hombu Dojo in Tokyo and to the son of O-sensei Ueshiba Kisshomaru. Moreover there are several other schools founded by students of Ueshiba Morihei, e.g. Kinotoitsukai (Tohei Koichi), Yoseikan (Mochizuki Minoru), Yoshinkan (Shioda Gozo) and Tendo ryu (Shimizu Kenji).
One of the most famous aikido practitioners around today is the actor Steven Seagal.
